Child and Youth Worker
Ontario College Advanced Diploma (610)
Fennell and Brantford Campuses, Three year
Start date: Fennell - September, January; Brantford - September

Highlights

  • Specialize in supporting change with children, youth and their families experiencing a range of social, emotional and behavioural challenges
  • Implement a range of prevention, intervention and treatment strategies for children, youth and their families including crisis intervention, conflict management, problem solving, counselling, activity programming, and group work
  • Work with client challenges including difficult home situations, substance abuse, behavioural problems, and conflicts with the law
  • Advocate for the rights of children and youth
  • Participate in field placements including one with adolescent clients and one in a residential setting
  • Option to fast track is available third year
  • Investigate Child and Youth Worker through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) or consider a traditional Apprenticeship in Child & Youth Worker

Admission Requirements

  • OSSD or equivalent (GED, College & Career Preparation) including:
    • Grade 12 English general (70% guideline) or advanced, C or U
  •  Online program application
  • Program orientation available to all applicants
  • Two letters of reference
  • Mature applicants are considered individually
  • The CYW program also offers a process that allows credit for prior learning
  • Up to 75% of the credits required may be achieved through the experiential learning mode
  • Advanced standing will be processed on an individual basis

NOTE: Registered students who have been convicted of an offence under the criminal code for which they have not been pardoned may be denied the opportunity to enter clinical placement. A certificate of “Police Clearance” and/or “Consent to Disclosure” may be requested by the clinical placement agency.

Within both the classes and the practice of Child and Youth Work there is considerable group work.

It is recommended that students complete a Standard First Aid & CPR course prior to admission since this is a requirement for field placement in 2nd semester.
