Financial Assistance Available For Dayschool Students

OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) is a financial assistance program provided by the Federal & Provincial government and is available for full-time day students , who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons. Its main component is the Canada - Ontario Student Loan Program. The purpose of this program is to supplement, but not to replace the student's, the family's or other resources. Applicants to first year should apply at least eight weeks before studies begin. Registered students (second or third year) should check with the Financial Aid Office for application deadlines. Part-time day students are eligible to apply for Part Time Canada Student Loans. Applications and information booklets are available in the Financial Aid Office at Fennell and at the Brantford, Stoney Creek and IAHS Student Services Offices.
N.B. Please be advised that the College is not required to await O.S.A.P. awards for payment of fees. Students are expected to pay fees from their own resources according to the published fee schedules and deadlines.
The following bursaries are available to students who are eligible for and collecting OSAP:
Child Care Bursary is available to offset child care costs for the third or more children (funding for child care for the first two children is provided through the OSAP loan program). Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office at Fennell Campus and the Brantford, Stoney Creek and IAHS Student Services Office.
Disability Bursary The purpose of this bursary is to assist students with documented permanent or temporary disabilities to accommodate full-time studies at college or university. Examples of disability-related educational expenses are hearing aids, vision aids, learning disability assessments, etc.
The maximum allowable value of the Bursary for Students with Disabilities is $10,000 per academic year.
The application process starts with an interview with the educational institution's Disability Services Case Managers (contact Counselling & Disability Services ), who will approve the appropriate equipment or service for the student, cost the equipment or service and then submit the application to the Financial Aid Office to have the cheque cut for the student.
Child Care and Disability Bursary funding are also non-repayable and taxable and supplement any OSAP loan assistance that students may receive. Student Help Fund (Tuition Set-Aside)
Student Help Fund (Tuition Set-Aside)
Assistance in the form of non-repayable, taxable bursaries is available to needy students who are residents of Ontario, registered in a Ministry approved certificate or diploma program and in good academic standing. Funds are available to assist with educational and related expenses when all other forms of assistance are exhausted and financial need is not met. Students are expected to apply for OSAP and use their own resources such as savings, earnings from employment and family income. The following bursaries are available:
Work Study Read the FAQ Provides job opportunities on-campus (up to 15 hours per week) for students who are registered in at least 60% of their full time course load (40% for students with disabilities). Jobs are posted in the Student Life Office and advertised in the "Campus Connection" newsletter.
Summer Employment Program is available from May - August, during the summer semester. Watch for details on Mocomotion in March.
Tuition Bursary assists students who are not receiving OSAP or do not receive enough to cover their tuition. Recipients of tuition bursaries will be selected on financial need and academic standing. Tuition Bursary Application. Once filled out, the Tuition Bursary Application should be handed in to the Financial Aid Office (C068 - Fennell Campus) or the Student Services Office (A102- Brantford Campus, Room 1- Stoney Creek Campus, Room 121 - I.A.H.S.).
General Help Fund Read the FAQ is available to assist with reasonable education-related expenses for students who have unmet need through OSAP or who are not eligible for OSAP. Assistance is provided on a limited basis to students in financial crisis to help students carry on with their studies at Mohawk College.Requests are considered by the Financial Aid staff on an individual basis.
Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office at Fennell Campus or the Student Services Offices at Brantford, Stoney Creek or IAHS campus, according to posted deadlines.
Services provided by the MSA (Mohawk Students' Association)
Student Health Plan , covered by the Student Activity Fee, is available for registered students and includes accidental dental coverage, accidental medical expense, excess hospital/medical, ambulance and prosthetic appliances benefits plus an 80% reimbursement of most prescriptions. Claim forms are available in the MSA Office at Fennell Campus and in the Health Clinics at other campuses.
Emergency Loans of $100 and grants dependent on need and available funding are also accessible.
Food Share in G109, Fennell campus. The MSA has a "no questions asked" policy, but ask that students take only as much as they need.
Legal Services , the MSA has hired a lawyer who comes to Fennell campus one half day a week (Thursday mornings) and Brantford Campus every second Thursday afternoon to provide free legal service. Appointments can be made in the MSA office G109 at Fennell (905) 575-2393.
Free affidavits relating to College Business may be arranged by appointment with the Director of Corporate Services : (905) 575-2174 at Fennell campus.
Services available through the Health Clinics
Medication: Students are given their first dose of antibiotics, free pain medication, their first three months of oral contraceptives and other medications as required. Low cost birth control pills and hepatitis vaccine are also offered.
Crutches/canes/tensors: Crutches and canes are loaned out with a $20 deposit. This deposit is refunded to the student when the crutches and canes are returned. Free tensor bandages are given to the injured.
Taxi slips are given to students who are ill and require transportation home or to the hospital.

In addition, over 400 awards and scholarships are available each year for registered students, including the new Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund.
