7. English as a Second Language (ESL) Applicants
If English is not your first language, we invite you to find out your current language level by taking the Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT). There is no cost involved. The CLBPT assesses your ability in 4 key areas:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening
  • Speaking

We know that to be successful in college, you need to achieve certain minimum scores in each area. The test takes about 2 hours to complete. About 2 weeks later, you can meet with a counsellor to discuss the options available to you if you need more language training.

  • To take the CLBPT, please sign up in Room J135 (inside the Math Learning Centre) at the Fennell campus, or call 905-575-2012.
  • If you have recently arrived in Canada and you have taken a CLBA from the Settlement Integration Services Organization (S.I.S.O.), it is not necessary for you to take this test.

8. Mature Applicant Test: M.A.T.
If you have already applied to a Mohawk program but do not have the required courses in English, Math, Physics or Chemistry, you will be invited to take Mohawk’s Mature Applicant Test (M.A.T). Potential students must apply to Mohawk through www.ontariocolleges.ca first. You will then receive a letter or telephone call to attend a testing session. Please note that there is a $40.00 fee to write the M.A.T.

  • The English component of the M.A.T. is a standardized reading comprehension and vocabulary test.
  • If you need to take the Math component of the M.A.T., we recommend you purchase Math Skills for College: Are you Ready? from the bookstore at Fennell Campus (under $10 including GST). This Custom Courseware module has been designed to assist you in assessing your math skills before entering a college math course. The module clearly identifies the topic areas that will be tested on the Math for Business and Math for Technology mature applicant tests and provides you with a comprehensive sample of the types of questions that will be asked on the tests. The introduction to this module states that “if you have difficulty with a specific area/topic, you may report to the Mathematics Learning Centre at Fennell Campus Room J137, where staff will direct you to the appropriate learning materials/videotapes.”

Note: The Mature Applicant Test is NOT sufficient as a prerequisite for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Medical Radiation Sciences Degree programs.
