Planned Giving
Planned Giving Program

From time to time, we all take a moment to reflect on our lives - the roads we have chosen, support we have received in times of need, and those fortunate opportunities we have had to help others.

As a college, we reflect on our successes and there have been thousands. Many of them have touched your lives in some way -the registered nurse who helped deliver your baby, the child care worker who mentored your children, the mortgage specialist at your bank, the civil engineering technologist who helped design the new highway, or the construction engineering technician who built your home.

Through a planned gift to our Future Leaders Fund, you will have the opportunity to impact the lives of our students - our future leaders. A planned gift will make it possible for you to support Mohawk College to an even greater extent than you thought possible.

The Future Leaders Fund, will support the on-going need for scholarships and bursaries, campus-wide equipment renewal for classrooms and labs, and other priority needs.

A planned gift is made after careful consideration of your personal and family needs, and is tailored to fit your current and future financial situations. Planned gifts provide you with significant tax advantages and allow you to support excellence in education while enjoying tax savings that benefit you and your family.

Types of Planned Gifts

Bequests
Your will is one of the most important documents for you to have. It provides you with control over how the assets that you have accumulated throughout your life will be shared with those important to you. Whether it is your family or an organization that has special meaning to you, you will want to ensure that they are provided for according to your wishes. Without a will, the government will make the decision for you.

Your estate may include gifts of cash, securities, the proceeds of your RRSPs or RRIFs, real estate or other tangible property and could also reduce taxes on your final return.

Gifts of Life Insurance
Almost everyone has life insurance to ensure our loved ones are provided for. Your life insurance can also be used in several ways to make a special gift to your favourite charitable organization. Whether it be an existing or new policy, it can provide a significant gift to Mohawk College for the future and tax benefits to you today or through your estate. Mohawk College can be named as a beneficiary in your existing or new policy, you can transfer ownership of an existing policy to the College, or you can purchase a new policy on behalf of the College.

Charitable Gift Annuity
An annuity is an ideal way to provide a gift to Mohawk at a time when you still require the income from your assets. Incorporating a charitable gift annuity in your estate plan will make that possible. It can allow you to give a gift, save tax, and increase your income. A charitable gift annuity will secure a guaranteed stream of income for life while also making a special legacy to Mohawk College.

Gifts of Retirement Benefits
Your RRSP or RRIF is an easy way to leave a legacy to the College by naming Mohawk as the beneficiary. This allows you to make a substantial gift in the future without diminishing your assets today.

Charitable Remainder Trust
Assets such as cash, securities or real estate can either be left to Mohawk in your will or through a charitable remainder trust. A trust will allow you to make a gift now, receive immediate tax benefits and still continue to receive the income for as long as you and/or your spouse live, or for a specified number of years.

Gifts in Kind
Gifts in kind are donations that have tangible dollar value, for example real estate, stocks, bonds, equipment or art. The fair market value of the gift is determined by a qualified party and a charitable tax receipt is provided for the appraised value of the asset.

Gifts for Today
Like hospitals, universities and other colleges, Mohawk College relies on gifts of special significance from private donors to help us fulfill our commitment to academic excellence and innovation.

Your outright gift, whether it is cash, securities or tangible property such as real estate will help ensure our current and on-going needs are met. Giving to Mohawk College during your lifetime can be a gratifying experience as you see your gift at work among our students.

Financial Advice
The information provided on this website is general in nature providing only a brief overview of giving options. We encourage you to obtain qualified professional advice when developing your financial or estate plan. The Community Relations and Advancement Office at Mohawk College is happy to assist you and your advisors in any way possible.

In Recognition of Your Gift
Gifts of special significance will be recognized on our Donor Recognition Wall. Any gift may be made anonymously and will be respected as such. The College also respects the privacy of our donors and keeps your personal information strictly confidential.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our donors for your commitment to Mohawk College and for providing a legacy gift for our community and its future leaders.

Thank you!
