The program is available in Distance Education and traditional classroom formats. It is designed to meet the needs of nurses currently employed in a critical care setting but who wish to improve their knowledge and skills, or nurses who are currently working in other settings who wish to prepare themselves to function effectively in a critical care setting.
There are six theory modules and four clinical placements included in the program. Module 1 is a prerequisite or co-requisite for other modules. The other modules may be completed in any order. Each module is offered at least once during each academic year in a Distance Education format and a traditional format.
The PLA process may be used for some clinical experiences based on the learner’s documented clinical skills. Clinical experience is negotiated with appropriate clinical settings, based on the stated objectives of the module, the student’s identified needs, availability of clinical sites, and the student’s work schedule by the Program Manager. Courses in this program are also offered through Distance Education.
The purpose of the Critical Care Nursing Certificate Program is to prepare nurses to function in critical care settings. Theory and Clinical Placements are concurrent throughout the program so that individuals are able to respond to the many challenges in current critical nursing practice.
The nurse is a key member of the critical team, often functioning in a coordination capacity for the other members.
