The Autism and Behavioural Science Certificate program provides you with the expertise in the field of autism and behavioural science for application within the autism and children's service sector. Emphasis is placed on the design and implementation of effective behavioural treatment plans according to the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Intensive Behaviour Intervention (IBI).
Theories, terminology, and applications to current approaches to teamwork and working with families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are presented. The foundations of ethical thinking, professional codes of ethics, and the different perspectives and rationale for ethical decision making within a behavioural framework are introduced. The program provides you with the opportunity to apply, evaluate and modify the principles and procedures of ABA/IBI in working with children ASD. Also available through full-time studies.

Is the complete certificate available online?
Yes, all courses are offered online, including the nine mandatory courses and the two field placements.
What is the cost of the courses?

How do I register?
What is the meaning of the number of hours given for each course?
The number of hours shown are “equivalent classroom hours.” Thus, the workload for a 36-hour distance education course would be about the same as if you took a course through traditional classroom delivery that is offered 3 hours per week for 12 weeks. We estimate that the student workload for one course is approximately 6 – 10 hours per week.
How many courses can I take per semester?
You may take as many courses as you want per semester. However, if you are working and/or have a family, you may want to start with one or two courses; then you will get a sense of the workload in relation to your individual situation.
May I take more than one course at a time?
Yes, you may take more than one course at a time. Please keep in mind that you are expected to access your course every 48 hours.
What about textbooks and/or course manuals?
If your course has textbooks and/or manuals, you will be informed through the course outline/syllabus. You can order them through the Mohawk College Campus Store.
How do the Field Placements work?
There are two field placements required for the Autism and Behavioural Sciences Post-Graduate certificate. Field Placement 1 (WORK10019) can be taken only after Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder (HSCI10041), Introduction to Behavioural Analysis (HSCI10042) and Ethics and Professionalism (EDUC10034) have been completed. You must also have completed a Police check. Field Placement 1 is 140 hours in length.
Field Placement 2 (WORK10020) is 210 hours in length and can only be take after all nine theory courses are completed. You must also have completed Field Placement 1 or be taking it at the same time. A successful police check is also required.
Field placements are organized by the Field Placement coordinator in cooperation with the student.
Are the courses self-paced?
No, there are specific start and end dates for these courses and a schedule for the course activities. You must follow the schedule so you can complete all the course work on time and be marked before your final exam.
Where do I write exams, if there are any?
Final exams are usually written in person at the college during the last week of the course. Approximately six weeks before the end of the course, you can view exam information at the Distance Education Exam website. If you live outside a 100 km radius from the college, you are eligible to write with a proctor at another University or College test centre. See complete exam details at the Distance Education website.
What computer requirements do I need?
You need a Pentium class computer with Windows 95 or better with an Internet connection and the most up-to-date browser possible.
What are the withdrawal/refund procedures?
Click here to view this information.
How do I receive my final grade?
Grade reports are mailed to students by the Records Department after the semester is completed and grades are recorded.
Approximately four to six weeks after the end of your course, you can log into MoCoMotion and view them yourself. If you are waiting for grades outside of this timeframe, please contact the Records Department.
How many courses are in the certificate?
There are nine theory courses and two field placements which make up the Certificate in Autism and Behavioural Sciences.
What is the difference between the online courses and the full-time post-secondary certificate?
There are no differences in the quality and the content of the courses. You will receive the same credits and certification through either method. However, the online courses are “purchased” from either Seneca or Algonquin Colleges. The field placements will be coordinated by a Mohawk College faculty member and are offered every spring.
