Practical Nursing with Aboriginal Communities*
Location: Six Nations Polytechnic & Mohawk - McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences, Two year

 Highlights

  • The Practical Nursing diploma program is approved by the College of Nurses of Ontario. In 2007, the practical nursing program achieved the maximum approval term of five years from the college of nurses of Ontario
  • Develop knowledge and skills to the competency level of a beginning practical nurse practitioner
  • Clinical experience is concurrent with theory
  • Clinical placements provided in the health care agencies of Hamilton, Brantford, Halton, Niagara and the surrounding regions. Students are responsible for their own travel and costs to clinical placements 
  • Experience collaborative learning, the learning methodology used where you are responsible for your own learning and for contributing to the learning of your peers. The faculty member provides structure and acts as a facilitator through consultation, assisting with group collaborative activities and providing feedback
  • Program is designed in accordance with the standards of practical nursing programs of the Ministry of training, colleges and universities and the colleges of nurses of Ontario
  • Graduates are eligible to write the registration examinations for practical nurses conducted by the College of Nurses of Ontario

Admission Requirements

  • OSSD or equivalent (GED, College and Career Preparation) including:
    • 2 Senior English, including Grade 12 English general, advanced, C or U
    • 2 Senior Sciences (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) general, advanced, C or U
    • Grade 11 Math, M or U or Grade 12 C or U
  • Mature applicants may be considered on an individual basis; however they must be enrolled in or have completed:
    • 1 Senior English, including Grade 12 English general, advanced, C or U
    • 2 Senior Sciences (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) general, advanced, C or U
    • Grade 11 Math, M or U or Grade 12 C or U
  • It is recommended that all applicants have a good working knowledge of computers including Microsoft Office Applications
  • An English language proficiency test may be required as it is essential that applicants demonstrate the English language writing and speaking skills to successfully cope with academic and clinical placement components of the program
  • Accepted applicants are required to provide upon entry to the program:
    • CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation), Health Care Provider (BCLS-C), Heart and Stroke certification, which is to be updated annually
    • an up-to-date immunization record
  • Mask fitting is required prior to clinical placement and you are responsible for all costs associated with mask fit testing
  • Note: Upon passing the examinations and meeting the entry to practice regulations outlined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, Nursing Act 1991, graduates may receive a certificate of competence to practice as a Registered Practical Nurse. The Act indicates that candidates who are eligible for registration must not:
    • Have been found guilty of a criminal offence or an offence under the Narcotic Control Act or Food and Drugs Act
    • Suffer from a physical or mental condition / disorder that makes it desirable in the public interest that they don’t practice
  • Any of the above may be grounds for denial of registration and therefore denial of the right to practice
  • As of January 1, 2005 the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) requires all applicants for registration to provide a recent CPIC Criminal Record Synopsis (“CPIC Check”) as part of the registration process

NOTE: Registered students who have been convicted of an offence under the criminal code for which they have not been pardoned may be denied the opportunity to enter clinical placement. A certificate of "Police Clearance" and/or "Consent to Disclosure" may be requested by the clinical placement agency.
