Applicants may be able to complete a college certificate or diploma program by combining prior learning with the acquisition of new knowledge and skills in a program suited to individual needs and interests. Up to 75% of course credits required to earn a Mohawk College credential may be achieved through a combination of the following sources: - Transfer Credit or Exemptions: assessment of courses that have been successfully completed at accredited postsecondary institutions

Credit is granted on a course-by-course basis, and applicants should apply early to allow sufficient time for assessment. Challenge Exams and Prior Learning Assessment by Portfolio are subject to an assessment fee per course. Such fees are usually about half of the course tuition fee. The granting of credits for prior learning does not guarantee entry into any program of studies. The normal admission procedure to gain entrance into any certificate or diploma program at Mohawk College should be followed. Mohawk College Student Assistance Program Top of Page Making the Grades: As of Fall 2004, courses graded will be recorded on student transcripts in percentages, along with the credit value of each individual course. The minimum passing grade for all courses is 60%. Effective Fall 2004 Percentage Grades | Fall 1991-Spring 2004 Alpha Grades | | 100 - 95 | A+ | | 94 - 90 | A | | 89 - 85 | A- | | 84 - 80 | B+ | | 79 - 75 | B | | 74 - 70 | B- | | 69 - 65 | C+ | | 64 - 60 | C | | 59 - 0 | F | Dean's Honours will be awarded by the Dean of each Faculty at the end of each semester to students who have achieved a weighted GPA of 85% with no failures. The honours calculation prior to Fall 2004 will be calculated using a non-weighted GPA. Honours Graduate will be conferred on graduates who have achieved honours standing for each year of their program. This will include a non-weighted GPA for semesters prior to Fall 2004 and a weighted GPA for semesters Fall 2004 and beyond. In addition to percentage grades, the following designations may also be used on student transcripts: - AC-Attendance Complete and AN-Attendance Not Met: These designations are provided for non-credit courses for which attendance is the only measure of successful completion
- AU-Audit Student: Students may request to audit courses provided vacancies exist in the class, and they have received written approval from the course Associate Dean, or designate. Such requests must be made and a decision conveyed by the Associate Dean prior to registration. Audit students will not be required to submit assignments or write tests and examinations. A credit will not be granted and the designation of "AU" will be assigned by the instructor at the end of the course. Regular course fees, as stated in College publications, will apply
- CR-Credit Granted and the course will not be calculated in the weighted GPA
- E-Exemption: Exemptions from a course will be granted by the program Associate Dean to a student who:
- Can show successful completion of work of at least the same level and scope as defined by the course's module objectives, or
- Has successfully completed the prescribed exemption test(s). Application for exemption must be made to the Registration Centre or Student Services at other campuses no later than four weeks following the start of the semester. The work of the course from which the exemption is sought should be commenced and continued until notification of exemption, in writing, is received from the course Associate Dean
- Students with college or university credits may apply for exemptions for general education and selection courses
- Students granted exemptions are still required to pay full fees and will not receive a refund for these courses, unless they drop below a full course load. They will receive the designation "E" on their official transcript and the course will not be calculated in the weighted GPA
- A processing fee will be charged
- Read more information about exemptions on the Academic Records & Registration website
- I-Incomplete: This designation may be assigned when the student has not completed the requirements defined in the course outline and the student can be expected to clear the deficiency within a six-week period, as determined by the instructor. Students given an "Incomplete" will be permitted to proceed to the course for which the incomplete course is a prerequisite. Failure to successfully meet the requirements for the incomplete may result in a grade earned on the transcript
- R/FL-Requirements Met/Requirements Not Met: These designations are used for courses in which student learning is evaluated against course objectives, but where it would be inappropriate to record an actual grade. Students who successfully complete such a course receive "R" rather than a grade; those who are unsuccessful receive an "FL"
- UW-Unofficial Withdrawal: This designation may be assigned to a Continuing Education student who has not officially withdrawn from a course but either fails to commence the course or attends only the initial sessions and the course will not be calculated in the weighted GPA
Please direct any questions about exemptions to the department in which the course is offered. Forms are available in the Registration Centre at Fennell Campus or the Student Services Office at other campuses. Please submit academic transcripts to verify courses taken at other institutions. It is also advisable to attach a course outline in order to facilitate the evaluation of the exemption request. Top of Page Students will proceed from one level to the next according to the promotion policy for their program. A student will not be allowed to proceed to the next level if, in the opinion of the Associate Dean, insufficient prerequisites have been obtained. Departments should identify, at the beginning of the academic year, courses that are prerequisites for courses at subsequent levels.
