Men’s Volleyball
The Mohawk men’s volleyball team captured the silver medal in a weekend tournament at Limoilou in Quebec City.
In round robin action, the Mountaineers scored 3-0 sweeps of three teams, Montmorency, Medicine Hat and Outaouais, to finish first in their pool. They then topped the second place finisher in another pool, St. Jerome, 3-1. That put Mohawk into the semi finals where they nipped Algonquin 3-2. However, the Mountaineers dropped a 3-1 decision to host Limoilou in the tourney final. The scores in the gold medal match were 13-25, 25-15, 23-25, 19-25.
Two Mohawk players, Jasmin Cull and Matthew Schnarr were named tournament All-Stars.
The Mountaineers get back to OCAA play this Wednesday night (Jan. 10) when they meet Redeemer Royals at 8:00 pm at the Fennell Gym.
Women’s Volleyball
The Mohawk women’s volleyball team lost only one match over the weekend, but because of the timing of their defeat, they were eliminated at an invitational tournament at Durham College in Oshawa.
The Mountaineers split their first match with host Durham, winning 26-24 and losing 22-25. They then swept Canadore 25-17, 25-16, defeated St. Clair 25-12, 25-18, topped Nipissing 27-25, 26-24 and Niagara 25-19, 25-16. Those results gave Mohawk first place in their pool.
However, when they crossed over to meet the second place team in the other pool, Humber, they lost 19-25, 18-25 to the Hawks and were sent to the sidelines, as the tourney did not offer a bronze medal game. Ironically, the team Mohawk swept earlier in the day, the Nipissing University Lakers of North Bay, went on to take the title. Mountaineer setter Katie Johnston was named a tournament All-Star.
Mohawk plays its first OCAA League match of 2007 Wednesday (Jan. 10) when Redeemer visits the Fennell Gym at 6:00 pm.
Men’s Basketball
The Mohawk men’s basketball team suffered two defeats at a tournament at George Brown in Toronto over the weekend.
Seneca Sting beat the Mountaineers 83-62 in their opener Friday. Igor Trbojevic had 24 points and Marko Gacic added 18 for Mohawk.
The following day the Mountaineers were downed 90-84 by Durham. Dave Almas and Nick Gaspic scored 16 apiece for Mohawk. Gacic had 15, Trbojevic and Phil Bucknor collected 14 points each.
Mountaineers’ coach Brian Jonker says his charges will have to play much better in Sault Ste. Marie next weekend if they are going to put themselves in a good position to make the playoffs.
They meet Algoma University January 12 and Sault College January 13. |
