Men’s Volleyball
The beat goes on for the Mohawk men’s volleyball team. The Mountaineers, the top ranked team in Ontario and the reigning champions, improved their OCAA record to 5-0 with a 3-0 win over Redeemer at the Fennell Gym. The scores were 25-17, 25-18, 25-23.
Jasmin Cull led the Mountaineers with 24 points including 19 kills, two stuff blocks and three service aces. Kevin Watson had 10 points from five kills, four blocks and one ace for Mohawk.
Women’s Volleyball
The Redeemer Royals women’s team improved to 7-2 in the West with a 3-1 win over Mohawk. The Mountaineers , now 4-3 in the Central West, won the first set 25-20, but the Royals stormed back to take the next three games, 25-21, 25-16, 28-26.
Leah Waxman led Mohawk with 11 kills, one block and two aces for 14 points.
Men’s Basketball
It was a disappointing weekend in Sault Ste. Marie for Mohawk’s men’s basketball team. The Mountaineers dropped two, four point decisions.
Friday (Jan. 12), Mohawk lost 80-76 to the Algoma University Thunderbirds. The Mountaineers had a 16 point lead but couldn’t hold it. Igor Trbojevic had 19 points for Mohawk. Marko Gacic had 17, Nick Gaspic 16 and Dave Almas 14.
Saturday’s game played out differently but the result was similar. The Sault College Cougars won their first game in eight tries this season, 93-89. Mohawk came out extremely flat and trailed by 16 points. However, the Mountaineers finally got going and had a six point lead with eight minutes to go. But the Cougars would not be denied.
Trbojevic again led Mohawk with 28 points. Gacic had 20 and Gaspic, 18.
The Mountaineers saw their record slip to 3-6.
Women’s Basketball
The Mohawk women’s basketball team jumped out to an 11-4 lead at Algoma Friday (Jan. 12) before being whipped 69-31.
The Thunderbirds led 33-15 after 20 minutes as the Mountaineers failed to score in the final 8 minutes of the first half. Mohawk, which got into foul trouble in the second half, got nine points from Carrie Lawton. Rachel Boyce, Katie Goodburn and Erinn Belot each added five points.
While Algoma improved to 7-1, the Mountaineers slipped to 1-6.
Badminton
Mohawk badminton ace Margaret Myjak continued her winning ways over the weekend. The reigning OCAA champion and Canadian bronze medallist, won the women’s singles title at the Centennial Invitational Tournament in Scarborough. She also made it to the consolation final in mixed doubles before being defeated.
Mohawk teammate Crystal Oakes finished third in the women’s singles.
