Pre-Media & Entertainment

This Ontario College Certificate is intended to upgrade students’ college-level skills and enhance their academic confidence; it will also provide exposure to various media arts programs and career opportunities to assist students in identifying career directions and a learning path for further education. The program investigates media arts and entertainment career paths, particularly in the television, journalism, radio, advertising, creative and digital graphics media, and music programs offered by Mohawk College. Graduation from this one-year program should also enhance entry possibilities to university communications, multi media and cultural studies programs.

The program assesses the role of media arts and entertainment in influencing its audience, and prepares participants to view media messages critically to become better consumers of cultural products. In addition, development of perspectives on the impact of the message on the audience should aid participants in establishing personal moral and ethical benchmarks of accountability in offering cultural products to guide them as they pursue possible career opportunities.

Finally, through critique of actual media arts and entertainment products, the program offers learners an opportunity to analyze the role, function and responsibility of media arts and entertainment innovators and innovations in shaping world views, and cultural, social, political, technological, and economic conditions and influences through time. Learners will also benefit from hands-on experience with digital still photography and video cameras.
