Work Term Capabilities
(which do not reflect individual work experiences & exposures)

Surveying and Highway Design
  1. Plane surveying including horizontal, vertical and angular measurements.
  2. Knowledge of standards of acceptable levels of accuracy required for various engineering work.
  3. Traverse calculations, horizontal and vertical curves, use of total stations and surveying software for various engineering projects.
  4. Perform limited GIS queries and analysis.
Engineering Design
  1. Familiar with drawing standards.
  2. The use of standard drafting equipment and AutoCAD software.
  3. Design and detailing of steel concrete and timber structures.
  4. Preparation of working drawings from design notes.
Quantity Surveying
The students have completed a basic estimating course involving standard methods which include the following steps.
  1. Taking off quantities from design drawings.
  2. Organization of items and unit costs.
  3. Determining overall quantities and costs.
Materials Testing
The students have taken materials and soils courses that include instruction in:
  1. Standard Concrete Testing (slump, air tests, casting cylinders).
  2. Compaction Control (nuclear density tests).
  3. Soil classification and standard testing.

Municipal Services

  1. Fluid Mechanics.
  2. Storm, Sanitary Sewer system elements and design criteria.
  3. Water Supply Systems; water and waste-water treatment processes.

Report Writing
The students have instruction in Language Studies including a course in Technical Report Writing.
