Additional Information

Program Objectives This program provides the opportunity for the qualified candidate to become a materials and metallurgical technologist.

Studies involve the extraction of metals from their ores and the subsequent alloying, forming and shaping of them into useful products. The combustion of fuels and calculations for charges and operations of such units as blast furnaces and steel making furnaces are covered. In addition to these, the internal structure, physical characteristics and applications of metals and nonmetallic engineering materials such as ceramics, plastics, polymers and adhesives are studied.

Nondestructive methods such as x-ray and ultrasonic testing, foundry molding and casting techniques, and welding are also included.

Ancillary courses supporting the above are required such as mathematics, computers, statistics and English.

Program Recognition
Technology or Applied Science Programs
The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) conditionally recognizes this program as meeting all of the academic requirements for certification in the Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or Applied Science Technologist (AscT) category. Graduates and final year students are immediately eligible to be registered as Associate members of OACETT upon submission of the Graduate Application form available through OACETT. Additional requirements to become certified (work experience, the OACETT Professional Practice Examination, the OACETT Technology Report, peer references, etc.) will be requested once the application has been received. Requirements for certification are the jurisdiction of OACETT.
