Degree Opportunities
At Mohawk College, students and learning are at the heart of all we do. With this mission in mind, Mohawk has developed opportunities for students and graduates to continue learning in order to meet their educational and personal goals.

Mohawk is committed to providing flexible options with maximum recognition of college studies. Through a growing number of collaborative degrees and transfer agreements with leading universities in Canada, the United States and Australia, you can apply the learning you acquire at Mohawk to earn a related degree in less time, and at less cost.

Articulation agreements between Mohawk College and universities facilitate university admission for Mohawk College graduates by giving credit for college study. Our graduates may receive credit for several courses, or for a year or more towards a university degree. This allows students to develop practical skills and knowledge at the college level and to build on this foundation with more theoretical learning at university, an excellent return-on-investment for postsecondary tuition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is an articulation agreement?

A. An articulation agreement is a formal agreement between institutions that allows credits earned in specific programs at one institution to be applied towards direct entry or advanced standing at another institution. Simply put, articulation agreements allow you to continue your education at another institution without having to repeat certain courses to graduate.

Q. What is the advantage to an articulation agreement?

A. Articulation agreements allow you to continue your education at another institution without having to repeat certain courses to graduate. You can:

  • reduce duplication of instruction by transferring credits already obtained
  • save money on tuition, student fees and textbooks
  • enhance existing knowledge, skills and professional development opportunities
  • improve career readiness and focus
  • accelerate progress to achieve your career goal.

Q. Does an articulation agreement guarantee admission to the destination program?

A. No. Completion of Mohawk College credits does not guarantee admission to an articulated degree program. Admission after completing college courses, like all other admissions, is competitive. There may be a limit on the number of students admitted to the degree program. Higher grades improve your chances of successful admission.

Q. What are transfer credits?

A. Transfer is the recognition by one institution of education completed at another. Students who have completed a program of study at Mohawk College may be able to transfer credits earned at Mohawk towards advanced standing in an articulated program at another institution. Students must officially apply to have their credits recognized.

If you're admitted, and if the courses you've taken are a good match, you may be able to use credits you have already earned to fulfill some of the requirements of the articulated program. Knowing about transfer opportunities will help you make wise choices in your college studies so that you can continue your education toward a degree in your chosen field.

Q. How do institutions determine transfer credits?

A. There are several ways in which universities and colleges assess the number of credits that they will accept as transfer from one institution and program to another:

Block Transfer of Credits – a block transfer of credit is an agreement whereby a group of courses from a student’s program will be accepted to a related program and assigned a specific number of transfer credits. This is the simplest method of credit transfer.

Course by Course Credit Transfer – some universities work with Mohawk College to carefully match all college courses in a diploma program to the relevant university degree program. The university determines the courses that must be taken at the university and those which can be transferred from the college program.

Formal Agreements – Mohawk College has many formal, signed articulation agreements with universities. This means that the institutions stand behind their agreements, and will offer the best credit transfer possible to Mohawk graduates.

General Arrangements – there are several universities that have general arrangements for credit transfer for college graduates that apply to all Ontario colleges.

Individual Negotiation of Transfer Credit – all colleges and universities will consider credit transfer requests from individual students and treat them on a one-to-one basis.

Q. What does it mean when courses transfer for a different value?

A. Each institution has its own credit value system. Institutions will not usually assign more credit to a transfer course than they assign to their own course.

Q. How do I find out which schools will give me credit for my college work?

A. Visit the Mohawk College Transfer Opportunities Database to search for opportunities listed by your Mohawk program or by receiving institution. The database lists schools that recognize your diploma, outlines how your credits will count toward a relevant degree, and may indicate the minimum Grade Point Average required to be eligible for admission.

While every effort is made to keep the agreements in the database up-to-date you should check directly with the receiving institution for the most current information.

Q. What if the University I want to go to is not listed in the Mohawk Transfer Opportunities Database?

A. If the university you hope to attend is not listed, it means that you will have to contact them directly to see if your diploma will meet their entrance requirements and if any transfer credit is available. This is negotiated individually with each institution.

Q. What should I consider when choosing a degree or diploma completion institution?

A. There are a number of things you may want to consider:

  • Does the receiving institution have the program or courses I am interested in studying?
  • Will the receiving institution provide credit transfer or advanced standing for courses I have completed at Mohawk College?
  • Do I have the admission requirements to be accepted into the program?
  • Would I prefer to study full-time or part-time or is distance education the preferred option for me?
  • Is on-line learning available?
  • Where would I prefer to live?
  • What can I afford?
  • Are scholarships or bursaries available?

Q. What is the Ontario College University Transfer Guide?

A. A guide with database information about transfer agreements and collaborative programs between Ontario’s Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology and the Ontario Universities. It lists transfer policies and practices of all institutions and provides institutional contacts for further information.

You can access the Ontario College University Transfer Guide through the Quick Links menu on the right of this page or at www.ocutg.on.ca

Q. Where can I find more information about a university?

A. For some institutions, additional information is available on this site through the College University Transfers section.

The Transfer Opportunities Database provides details of articulation agreements and direct links to some universities. You can research a school and its services further by exploring its website. You are encouraged to contact the receiving institution directly for the most up to date information about credit transfers.

Periodically, representatives from universities participate in on-campus events or arrange information sessions at Mohawk. Notice of upcoming events will be sent through MoCoMotion and posted on the Degree Opportunities web site.

Q. What is the sending institution?

A. The institution from which you are transferring.

Q. What is the receiving institution?

A. The institution to which you are transferring.
