Men's Basketball
It was a busy week for the Mohawk men's basketball team, having to play three games in less than five days. They ran into a tough opponent February 5 at the Fennell Gym, losing 85-42 to the Sheridan Bruins. Every Bruin who stepped on the court scored. The top scorer for the Mountaineers was Tyrone Berry with 13 points.
One glaring statistic from the contest was the Mountaineers' three-point shooting, as they were only 3-for-27 in that department. "You'd never know that we went to overtime with them at their place, said Mohawk coach Brian Jonker. They (Sheridan) brought alot of defensive intensity, especially in the first 12-14 minutes of the game. We didn't react to it well offensively and consequently, you get behind 20 pretty quick."
Algoma Thunderbirds checked into town February 8 and scored an 85-77 decision over the Mountaineers, despite 25 points from Jerome Smith and 18 from Ricky Heath.
It was a different story the afternoon of February 9 as Mohawk whipped the Sault College Cougars 116-79. Heath scored 23 points, Berry 22 and Mike Barr contributed 18.
Even though his team topped the century mark in scoring, Coach Jonker still had concerns about the Mountaineers defensive play. And while the team would need some help, Mohawk still had a mathematical chance at hosting a playoff game after improving its record to 9-7.
Women's Basketball
Mohawk had a tough time with the Sheridan Bruins in women's basketball February 5. The Mountaineer women actually started out well, tied 5-5 and were down only 16-11 several minutes later. But it was at this point where the Bruins went on three major runs, and except near the end of the game, Mohawk showed little resistance.
The game was never in doubt when Sheridan took a 43-13 lead to their dressing room at intermission. "We came to play, said Mountaineers' coach Kelly Dunham. "But when we were down by five points we tried the fast break but the passing was bad." Dunham was also displeased with her players' decision making. Melissa Zwolak was the top scorer for Mohawk with eight points. Stacey Bourque scored seven and Lisamarie Iavarone had six.
It was much closer February 8, but Algoma topped the Mountaineers 55-50. Zwolak had 15 points and Iavarone added 13 in a losing cause as the Mountaineers saw their record slip to 2-10.
Men's Volleyball
The men's volleyball team rolled to its 11th win without a loss, sweeping the Niagara Knights 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 in Welland February 6.
Peter Snioulis, the All-Canadian setter, doesn't often show up on the the offensive stats sheet, but he sure did in this match, leading Mohawk with 13 points from nine kills, two stuff blocks and two service aces. Adam Schiedel had five kills, two blocks and three aces, Jasmin Cull collected eight kills and two aces and Kevin Watson had nine kills and one block.
Women's Volleyball
The Mohawk women's volleyball team snapped a two-match losing streak, rallying for a 19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 decision at Niagara February 6. Janette Jakubiec collected eight kills, three stuff blocks and one service ace for the Mountaineers while Leah Waxman had 12 kills and 10 digs.
February 9, at the Fennell Gym, the Mountaineers swept Sault College 25-13, 25-21, 25-10. It was a comfortable victory with the Cougars only coming close in the second set when Mohawk coach Brian McEnhill elected to go with his second unit. Waxman had 12 kills and four service aces while Sarah Borycki contributed 12 kills and one ace. With the win, the Mountaineers improved their record to 11-2 in the Central West Region.
