More students applying to Mohawk for Fall 2008
HAMILTON - Mohawk College is reporting a 5.9 per cent increase in student applications as of early February compared with the same time last year.
In late January, the Ontario College Application Service reported the province's 24 colleges had received 54,429 applications, a 4 per cent increase compared with the same time last year. According to Colleges Ontario, 60 per cent of first-year post-secondary students in Ontario attend college compared with just over 40 per cent who enter university.
Mohawk achieved a 4.5 per cent increase in student registrations last year and is forecasting a similar increase this year on the strength of applications received to date. Mohawk has 10,000 full-time and 3,000 apprenticeship students, as well as 40,000 continuing education registrants.
"Mohawk College has earned a reputation for helping students to develop the skills and the gain the experience to graduate to success and get the job done for employers," says President MaryLynn West-Moynes. The graduate employment rate for Mohawk College is 92.5 per cent and 93 per cent of employers report being satisfied or very satisfied with the Mohawk graduates that they have hired.
Approximately one-third of Mohawk students arrive at college directly from secondary school. More than 10 per cent of Mohawk students are enrolled in collaborative degree programs that combine the best of both a college and university education.
