OCAA Volleyball Championships
The Mohawk men captured the Gold Medal and the Mountaineer women grabbed the Bronze at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Volleyball Championships at Fanshawe College in London Saturday (Feb. 23).
The men's team scored an impressive three game sweep of defending champion Algonquin Thunder of Ottawa. The scores were 25-16, 25-14, 25-18. All Canadian Jasmin Cull had a monster match for the Mountaineers with 30 offensive points, including 28 kills, one stuff block and one service ace. The next best total for Mohawk was Adam Schiedel with nine points from 8 kills and one block.
Cull was named Tournament Most Valuable Player. Schiedel was joined by team mates Peter Sniuolis and Kevin Watson as All-Stars.Humber won the bronze medal with a 3-1 triumph over host Fanshawe.
With the victory, the Mountaineers advance to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Championship at Humber College March 7-9.
Meanwhile, the Mohawk women went home with their third straight OCAA bronze medal, with a 3-1 verdict over Fanshawe. The scores were 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20.
Two Mountaineers had 12 points. Tournament All-Star Rachel VanHartingsveldt had ten kills and two blocks, while Sarah Borycki came up with eight kills, two blocks and two aces. Leah Waxman chipped in with 11 points and Janette Jakubiec added 10.
Humber beat Nipissing 3-0 for the Gold Medal and it marked the third consecutive year that Central West Region teams took all three women's medals.
Men's Basketball
The Mohawk Mountaineers will not make it to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championships in Hamilton this week.
The Mountaineers bowed 83-75 to the Algonquin Thunder in their cross over playoff game in Ottawa Saturday (Feb. 23). Tyrone Berry led Mohawk with 18 points. Jerome Smith had 13 and Ricky Heath, 12.
Mountaineers' coach Brian Jonker described it as a real disappointing way to end the season. "We have been playing well the last couple of weeks and really felt we had a great chance to win this game and compete for a championship in our own gym," said Jonker.
The OCAA tourney goes February 28-March 1 at Mohawk.
