Mohawk students planning Steeltown Amazing Race for City Kidz
HAMILTON – A team of Mohawk College students is looking to make the grade by making a difference for inner city children and youth.
Students in Mohawk's Event Management post-graduate program are working with City Kidz on the first annual Steeltown Amazing Race fundraiser April 5. Up to 50 two-person teams will compete in a series of challenges throughout Hamilton, with registration fees and pledges supporting City Kidz, a nonprofit organization that serves more than 1,000 inner city children and youth. The fundraiser is modeled after the Amazing Race reality television show, where teams put their skills and abilities to the test in a series of checkpoints, roadblocks and detours.
Mohawk professor and Event Management program coordinator Julie Aumais says the partnership with City Kidz offers students a one-of-a-kind learning, leadership and citizenship opportunity. "Students are applying what they've learned in the program to help make a real difference in our community," says Aumais. "And when they meet with prospective employers, our graduates can say not only 'here's what I learned' but 'here's what I did'."
The 28 college and university graduates enrolled in the one-year Event Management post-graduate certificate program are working with City Kidz to plan, promote, organize and run the fundraiser and solicit sponsorships. To support the Steeltown Amazing Race or to register a team, go to
