Hundreds of students to show off engineering skills in bridge-building TechnoChallenge showdown at Mohawk
HAMILTON – Hundreds of secondary school students from across the region and college students from across Ontario will be competing for scholarships in the 21st annual TechnoChallenge at Mohawk College this Tuesday and Wednesday.
The highlight of the two-day event is the Popsicle stick bridge-building competition. In 1997, a Mohawk student built a 226-gram bridge that carried a record-setting 5,300 times its own weight before cracking and shattering into splinters in a testing jig.
TechnoChallenge was created and continues to be coordinated by Mohawk professors Peter Olynyk and Paul "Captain Crunch" Cronkwright as a way to showcase the engineering technology skills of students and highlight the postsecondary and career opportunities in engineering technology. Along with the Popsicle Stick Challenge, students will compete in Mad 4 Cad, Electrifive, Sudoku and Amazebot.
