The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association has announced eight student athletes from Mohawk College have been named SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadians for combining their skills on the court and in the classroom.
To achieve this honour, a student-athlete must be named to his/her respective Provincial All-Star teams (1st and 2nd) in a CCAA Sport, and must achieve a GPA standing of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent as defined by his/her institution.
Three members of the Mohawk men's volleyball team are on the list. They include Sean Lowe, Kevin Watson and Codey Forrest. Janette Jakubiec from the women's volleyball team made the grade as did cross country runner Charlene Gibbins, basketball player Mackenzie Milmine, and Kelsey Forbes and Ali Bettger, both from the women's soccer team.
"To achieve excellence in both sport and academics requires tremendous skill, dedication and perseverance. SIRC is honoured to recognize those outstanding collegiate student-athletes who are also passionate about excelling in their education," expressed Debra Gassewitz, President and CEO, SIRC.
"Both SIRC and the CCAA share a commitment to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the education purpose," expressed Sandra Murray-MacDonell, CCAA Executive Director. "We are very proud to recognize and celebrate those student-athletes who've achieved academic and athletic excellence."
