E=mcs reminds me of the quote by Peter Drucker; "Efficiency is doing right things right; effectiveness is doing the right things. There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all".
Following graduation from the University of Western Ontario in the late 70's, I was fortunate enough to land a job in Human Resources at Mohawk College. My career here has spanned 27 years, most of which was in the Registrar's division. In 2001, I became Mohawk's first female Registrar. In this position for the next six years, I helped lead the division and college through a period of major change with the implementation of a new Student Information System, SCT Banner. Improving the way we do business to serve our students better, and leading change has always been my passion.
In July of 2007, I was thrilled to accept the opportunity to lead the college into a Business Process Review. Mohawk is a dynamic place, with abundant opportunities for staff and students. As with any large complex organization, keeping pace with change presents challenges at all levels. Managing day to day activities can be all consuming. It makes it difficult to step back to analyze how we are working. Our team is about removing barriers which prevent us from moving forward, eliminating non valued added work, removing silos and improving communication.
In April of this year, I was named Director of Institutional Effectiveness Initiatives, reporting to Rick Kawai, CIO.

To me, E=mcs represents the energy that Mohawk College Students and Staff bring into the building everyday. It's the drive that brings us together for a reason, to contribute to the future, mine, yours, our students, our friends, our families. Education brings members of a community together to succeed.
As a member of the Intuitional Effectives and Satisfaction (IES) project I have the opportunity to bring the Mohawk College community closer together. To discover, explore and create an energized environment.
Being part of Mohawk College as an employee and a student has a special presence within it. I have the opportunity to enhance the environment that enhanced me. I'm a graduate of the Business Administration Program and have been employed at Mohawk in various capacities since 1998. I've held positions in the Purchasing and Accounting Departments on contracts then ventured out west where I was employed by one of Canada's top 100 companies MDA Essential Information Solutions Company. When the opportunity came up to return home to Hamilton and work at Mohawk College in June 2002, I went for it. Since then I have been fulltime and have held positions in the Purchasing Department, on the Banner Team and as the Financial and Academic Data Analyst for Applied Arts and Brantford, School of Liberal Arts and Science and Brantford Campus. As part of the IES Team, I want everyone to discover what E=mcs means to them!

To me, E=mcs represents the emphasis that Mohawk College puts on its Students. As a graduate of Mohawk College (and McMaster) and as a faculty member at the College for 20 years, students and learning ARE the heart of all we do.
As a member of the Computer Science department (now... Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology... isn't that a mouthful!), I have been a faculty member and at various times taken on program, scheduling and administrative co-ordinator roles.
At the request of Shelagh Gill, I was seconded for 3 years to assist with the development and implementation of Banner Student and also tasked with the development of FAST Suite Student that allows faculty & staff to access student information, enter grades and at the end of the semester, promote students.
My time on the Banner team allowed me to interact with large numbers of very hard working staff. My hope, as a member of the Intuitional Effectiveness and Satisfaction (IES) project, is that we can assist these hard working staff members by developing (with their input of course!) processes that are more efficient and will allow them to provide service to our students more effectively.
