Launch Your Second Career!

What is Second Career?
Second Career helps laid-off workers get the skills training they need for high-demand jobs in their communities.  Second Career was launched in June 2008 to help laid-off Ontarians identify and train for new careers in growing sectors.  Each participant can receive up to $28,000 to help pay for tuition, travel, books and other training costs.

Other Employment Ontario programs like Ontario Skills Development also provide support for training.

How is Second Career changing?
Ontario is expanding access to Second Career.  These new enhancements will allow more laid-off workers to participate and take advantage of the training opportunities available and build new skills for the careers of the future.

As of November 10, 2008, the guidelines for Second Career will be expanded to include:

  • Workers laid off as far back as January 1, 2005
  • Laid-off workers who have taken an interim job to make ends meet
  • Short term training options (less than six months) for laid-off workers who are not eligible for Employment Insurance
  • Potential additional financial assistance to cover expenses for the cost of academic upgrading, living away from home while participating in training, and dependent care.

Who is eligible for Second Career?

Eligible individuals are those who have been laid-off on or after January 1, 2005 including EI active claimants, EI reachback and Non-EI-eligible, and who require skills training for employment in demand occupations in Ontario.

What are the Second Career training options?
Skills training periods of up to 2 years in duration will be considered.  In instances where the worker requires academic upgrading / preparatory training as a prerequisite to the worker's participation in skills training, the total training period can be a maximum of 3 years.

What kind of support is available?

Second Career provides up to $28,000 to support tuition, travel, books and other training-related costs.  Additional funds may be available for people with disabilities, and for people who need help to pay for academic upgrading, the costs of living away from home, or child care.
