Mohawk gets $1.8 million for three projects to help laid-off workers and employers

HAMILTON -- Mohawk College is receiving $1,8686,055 from Employment Ontario to help make it easier for laid-off workers to find new jobs faster in growing sectors of the regional economy.

Employment Ontario has approved two Ontario Labour Market Partnership projects under Ontario Employment and Benefit Support Measures (OEBSM) funding. The Ontario Labour Market Partnership program supports partnerships among employers, employer/employee associations and community organizations that address identified labour market issues in their communities.

Employer Service Access is a collaborative project with the Hamilton Training Advisory Board and supported by the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. The project will make it easier for employers in the region to connect with employment support services offered by all levels of government and community service providers ($456,544 in funding).
- Job Creation Roundtable will help mobilize community support for long-term economic development strategies that create and retain jobs in Hamilton. The project will support the work of the Jobs Prosperity Collaborative, an initiative co-convened by Mohawk and the City of Hamilton ($99,951 in funding.)
Through a Rapid Response and Training Service (RRTS) initiative, Mohawk will assist workers and communities affected by layoffs and downsizing. Skills Pathways Training Access will offer laid-off manufacturing workers specialized skills development and training in growing sectors of the economy. Training will be offered at Mohawk's STARRT Institute in Stoney Creek and Mohawk Brantford ($1,312,004 in funding).

As a strategic partner, Mohawk College will support Employment Ontario's efforts to implement a community employment response strategy that delivers employment services, foundation and higher skills and training in Hamilton and Brantford.

"Mohawk is proud to serve as a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity in the region," says Jim Vanderveken, Director of Mohawk's Community Training Solutions and Job Centre. "With funding from Employment Ontario, and together with community partners, Mohawk can now do even more to serve employers and workers."
