Mohawk opens new centre to serve Second Career students
HAMILTON - Mohawk College has opened a new College and Career Discovery Centre to help prospective students and particularly Second Career applicants research future training options at the College.
The Discovery Centre will help applicants quickly find information about Mohawk programs and services. Last week, Ontario announced a new $355 million Second Career program to help 20,000 recently laid off and unemployed workers. The new Employment Ontario program will make funds available to help workers retrain for in-demand jobs and meet the needs of the province's changing job market. The Second Career opportunity provides longer term funding for one or two years as well as academic preparation time, as compared to the current Skills Development program which funds training for up to one year. In applying for Second Career funding, applicants are required to research three skills training options, including one community college.
Advisors at Mohawk's College and Career Discovery Centre will help Second Career applicants and prospective students to determine what program will help them achieve a new career, and will provide immediate special services to help individuals make that important decision about their future.
Applicants can receive:
- Information about Mohawk's 120 full-time programs and career opportunities for job-ready graduates, including admission requirements.
- Assistance to completing their online application for Ontario colleges.
- Referrals for other College services to ensure they graduate to success.
- Connections to College tours at any of Mohawk's four campuses.
- Access to pre-admission assessments to determine competencies and upgrading requirements for program admission.
- Referrals to the Mohawk College and Career Preparation program which some may need prior to entering the full-time program of their choice.
- Basic job market data and career choices advice to complement what they receive from Employment Ontario.
"Our new College and Career Discovery Centre will help Second Career applicants quickly find the information they need and all of the services and supports we offer to help all students graduate to success," says President MaryLynn West-Moynes. "As a catalyst for economic growth, prosperity and social wellbeing in the communities we serve, Mohawk looks forward to helping Second Career students gain the skills and experience for new and rewarding careers with our industry and community partners." Demonstrating success, in the latest Key Performance Indicator survey mandated for Ontario's 24 publicly funded colleges, Mohawk achieved a 91.3 per cent graduate employment rate and a 93.3 per cent employer satisfaction rate.
The Mohawk College and Career Discovery Centre, located at the Fennell Campus, is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 905-575-2400 or email to
