Minister of Citizenship and Immigration tours Mohawk's healthcare bridging programs

Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Michael Chan was at Mohawk Friday to meet with skilled and experienced newcomers to Canada who are training to continue their careers in health care.

The Minister met with students and recent graduates from Mohawk's Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Nurses (BIEN) and the College's Bridging Program for Medical Laboratory Technology offered by the College's School of Continuing Education.

The BIEN Ontario College Certificate Program (http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/calendar/healthSciences/Choose_Nursing/BIEN.html) prepares internationally educated nurses to practice in Ontario, and serves as the bridge to the education and experience needed to register with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

The Bridging Program for Medical Laboratory Technology (http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/Discover/CE/health/fml.html) is a nine-month diploma program for internally educated Medical Laboratory Technologists and combines theory, laboratory sessions and clinical experience.

Both programs have graduate employment rates of more than 90 per cent.

Mohawk's School of Continuing Education also offers a Bridging Engineering Program (http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/Discover/CE/carts/BrEng.html) for internationally educated engineers, technologists and technicians to meet licensure and registration requirements in Ontario.

Nearly 70 per cent of newcomers to Ontario have some post-secondary education and immigration will soon account for all of the province's future labour market growth. In May, Minister Chan announced $408,047 in new funding for Mohawk's BIEN Program.
