Experience Biotechnology

Mohawk's Biotechnology Technician program prepares motivated and dynamic individuals for a future career working in one of the most rapidly expanding fields in Canada. Graduates demonstrate knowledge and skills in scientific methods and experimental techniques, using established principles of quality assurance and manufacturing.

Classroom instruction, combined with hands-on laboratory experience, provide students with knowledge to perform tasks in the following areas:

  • DNA and protein absorption spectrophotometry
  • Agarose gel DNA electrophoresis
  • Ion exchange and thin layer chromatography
  • Basic techniques in microbiology
  • Micropipetting, extractions, titrations, centrifugation and pH measurements using GLP

The classroom experience is enhanced by paid work semesters, extremely useful in ensuring graduates are work ready.

Career Opportunities
Biotechnology Technician graduates will work as lab assistants or technicians in:

  • Public or private laboratories
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Food processing industries
  • Agricultural products
  • Plant or livestock genetic engineering
  • Environmental engineering companies

Program Recognition
The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) recognizes this program as meeting all the academic requirements for certification in the Certified Technician (CTech) category. Graduates and final year students are immediately eligible to be registered as Associate members of OACETT upon submission of the Graduate Application form available through OACETT. Additional requirements to become fully certified (work experience, the OACETT Professional Practice Examination, peer references, etc.) will be requested once the application has been received. Requirements for certification are the jurisdiction of OACETT.
