Welcome from the Board Chair The 2007-08 year marks the 40th anniversary of Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology, as we were created in 1967, Canada's centennial year. We're also celebrating our 50th anniversary as a leader in technology, since we became the Hamilton Institute of Technology in 1957, and our 60th anniversary as a leader in postsecondary education since we began as the Provincial Institute of Textiles in 1947. We are dedicated to our vision of inspiring learning, leadership and citizenship, and our mission that students and learning are at the heart of all we do.
Mohawk's Board of Governors, together with all our staff, are committed to helping each and every student realize their potential and achieve their dreams. Over the course of the fall, we will also be focused on the development of a multi-year Strategic Plan, a follow up to Vision Like A Hawk: Strategic Plan 2004 to 2007. We will be undertaking significant consultations with student, staff and external stakeholders, as we define how we can distinguish ourselves in the future as a leading Canadian college.
Mohawk's success can be best measured by the success of our students and our graduates. More than 92.5 per cent of Mohawk students are employed within six months of graduating from the College and, 92.8 per cent of employers express satisfaction with the learning of our graduates. To me, both represent a very successful A+ for our students and graduates.
With 10,000 full-time, 3,000 apprenticeship, and 300 international students, as well as 42,000 continuing education registrants, it is vital that we plan our next several years with ambition. Mohawk means business and we work closely with industry and community partners to make sure our students are learning and mastering the skills and abilities needed for employers to compete with the best in the world.
The Board of Governors is also committed to ensuring affordable access to postsecondary opportunities, and with over $6.6 million in scholarships, bursaries and work study opportunities, we continue to work to help remove financial barriers for our students.
An education at Mohawk College is an investment that contributes to economic prosperity for all. Our students graduate into rewarding careers and employers gain a competitive advantage and economic edge with a highly skilled workforce.
I encourage you to get involved in your College community. If you have questions or would like more information about governance at Mohawk College, please do not hesitate to contact Lynn Chalmers, Executive Assistant to the Board of Governors, (905) 575-2091.
